Kalmakumpu

Kalmakumpu is an experimental children’s comic about a pet cemetery and its caretaker. Most of the characters are based on suggestions made by children. Children have been able to submit a real pet they miss or a fictional character. Roope Eronen has created Kalmakumpu based on the children's ideas. Kalmakumpu explores themes of death and grief in a gentle, playful, and participatory way. The project is supported by a grant from the Kone Foundation through the end of 2027.

The first book introduces the graveyard and its habitants. In the evening they join their forces to organize a wild party. In the second book, we meet the ferocious grim reaper hamster Tomi and participate in a secret rescue operation in Kalmakumpu with a hypnotizing snake and a screaming spider. Third book descends into the introspective aspects of autumn and is staged mostly underground. Kalmakumpu’s residents travel in their memories and teleports.
